With the trend of wearable fitness trackers hitting its stride, companies are now turning from a focus on performance to a focus on aesthetics. It’s not secret that many of the fitness trackers on the market are clunky, and not at all subtle.
Mashable has reported that Fitbit is hoping to buck the trend of obvious, in your face wearable tech by launching The Alta, the company’s first-ever female-focused fitness tracker. This is the first step in producing fashionable tech that women actually want to wear.
Early last week, category leader Fitbit released the Alta, a significantly sleeker model that is aimed at women. The device retails at $129.95, and comes with a colorful “tap” display, rather than the typical touch display seen on similar devices. The Fitbit Alta is sleeker, and intended to fit snugly on smaller wrists, more similar to jewelry than gadget. With multiple straps that can be switched in between hitting the gym and dinner, the Alta has customizable options its predecessors didn’t.
Style and versatility are important factors in wearable tech, but the Alta also comes with features that you’d expect in other Fitbit fitness trackers, including activity tracking, automatic sleep monitoring, silent alarms and a five-day battery life. What’s different about the Alta in terms of functionality is that rather than giving the user generalized notifications, the tracker gives users information you actually need- like incoming voice calls, Twitter updates, and calendar information; basically, you’ll be able to keep your smartphone tucked away, and your focus on your activity.
The Fitbit Alta, which is now available for pre-sale, will officially launch in North America in March and worldwide in April.
