If you’re fond of drinking coffee, you might want to consider switching to green coffee, especially if you want to lose some weight.
According to Rick Hay, the Nutritional Director of Healthista, green coffee is a better alternative to regular coffee because it can also promote weight loss.
If you’re looking for a healthier alternative to your daily cup(s) of joe, try green coffee bean extract, “the less processed version of coffee.” Hay explained that green coffee bean extract is a natural stimulant. Since it is the less-processed version of coffee, it has less caffeine than regular coffee.
A complex process isn’t required to make green coffee beans. In fact, they’re just unroasted coffee beans.
Coffee beans, which are naturally green, are often roasted before they are sold. The roasting process is what turns green coffee beans brown.
The beans are full of antioxidants and pharmacologically-active compounds. Two of the most crucial ones are caffeine and chlorogenic acid. However, most of the chlorogenic acid is removed when coffee is roasted.
Chlorogenic acid is believed to be the main component of green coffee beans and they are responsible for its weight loss effects. This is why regular coffee beans don’t have the same effect.
Researchers have already studied the weight loss effects of green coffee beans.
In Norway, scientists conducted a 12-week study that involved 30 overweight individuals. The participants were divided into two groups: The first drank regular instant coffee and the second group drank instant coffee enriched with 200 milligrams (mg) of green coffee bean extract. The two groups were told not to make any changes to their diet or exercise habits.
Study findings revealed that the second group, which drank the instant coffee with green coffee bean extract, lost at least three times as much weight compared to the first group. The second group lost about 5.4 kg on average, compared to the second group which only lost about 1.7 kg during the study.
Green coffee can do more than promote weight loss. Green coffee bean extract can boost your body’s energy production and blood circulation. Additionally, it can strengthen your immune function since it is full of potent antioxidants called polyphenols. (Related: Are Green Coffee Beans the Perfect Weight Loss Superfood?)
Research shows that green coffee can change how the body absorbs and uses carbohydrates. Based on data from animal studies, scientists posit that supplementing chlorogenic acid may help reduce glucose absorption.
This effect on glucose metabolism means green coffee might have a protective role in diabetes management. It can also explain how green coffee promotes weight loss.
Data also showed that green coffee extract can positively affect blood vessels, which can help boost heart health. Based on study findings, taking doses of between 140-720 mg per day can help lower blood pressure in both rats and humans with high blood pressure. The chlorogenic acid in green coffee bean extract also functions as an antioxidant.
However, since green coffee still contains caffeine, you need to make sure you only take the proper dosage. Hay suggests consuming only 200-400 mg of green coffee bean powder daily. You can mix green coffee bean extract in a smoothie or juice, or you can drink it plain with some water.
